maciej markowicz has long been captivated with the tactile process of painting, and in particularly the sculptural by product. through the layering of action (gesture) of various artists’ palettes, a randomized beauty emerges. this series was inspired by visits to artists’ painting studios, and the fascination provoked by these used palettes, and their evidence of work, thought and pigment. an intense attention to shape, color and texture transforms the corporeal presence into the medium of photography.

each photograph is a study of inadvertent collaboration between anonymous artists who, while working on their deliberate paintings, leave traces of paint on the palettes. as a result of this collective action, each surface becomes a unique sculptural object. through the subconscious process of accumulations a sense of individual intent emerges. each stage of preexisting substances on the palette determines the next artist’s action of where to mix the paint. the randomness of this activity itself becomes its process, which defines the physicality of the palette.
